BIM is penetrating Kenya, but through just one type of software

3D modelling construction techniques are slowly gaining traction in the east African country of Kenya, but mainly on the back of a particular type of software unfamiliar to most construction professionals there, a Kenyan IT expert has said.

Software giant Autodesk is pushing the use of building information modelling, or BIM, through the adoption of its product, Revit, while most of east Africa is still dominated by Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD, writes Wambia Waigwa, an engineer at Kenyan IT consultancy CADtech, in GCR’s sister title, BIM+.

"I believe the trend of developers demanding the use of Revit will become the norm here and this will push BIM adoption within this region," Waigwa writes, giving the example of an American developer, who is building a factory, requiring all consultants to use Revit.

Waigwa said it was unlikely that the Kenyan government would push the use of BIM, as the UK government has done, and said the fact that most materials and components are imported from China would hamper attempts to integrate product data fully into 3D models.
